6 Blackberry Tips for Reading Emails [Blackberry Help]
In my previous post, 5 Useful Blackberry Tips and Tricks to Boost Your Productivity, I covered some of my favorite overall tips. In this, and future posts, I will be going deeper into different Blackberry tips that can help you.
Did you know you can use the keyboard to read Blackberry email? Here are my favorite keyboard shortcuts, a great way to speed up your email management system:
#1 – “T” – pressing the letter T when reading an email, jumps to the top of the email.
- Have you ever started reading an email, and then wondered who’s copied on the email? Just hit “T” to jump to the top of the email to see information like who is on the CC list, when it was sent, etc.
#2 – “B” – pressing the letter B when reading an email, jumps to the bottom of the email.
- This is really helpful when you are reading a reply and want to see the earlier message. By jumping to the bottom of the email, you can read the previous emails first, and read from the bottom-up to read the entire email trail.
#3 – “Space” – pressing the Spacebar jumps down one screen in the email.
- This is especially useful when you need to quickly scan emails you will read again later. By using this technique, you can scan email reports, long email chains, etc. quickly and effectively.
#4 – “Shift + Space” – pressing Shift and Space jumps up one screen in the email.
- This is especially useful after you hit “B” (outlined above), since you can use it to scan up an email more quickly than with the wheel.
#5 – “N” – pressing the letter N jumps to the next email.
- You can use this technique (combined with the others above) to quickly read Blackberry email with one hand. To use this technique, just hit the letter N when you are reading an email. You will jump to the next email in your inbox.
#6 – “P” – pressing the letter P jumps to previous email.
- Similar to the N tip above, pressing P will jump you to the previous email in your inbox. Both N and P are a great way to scan your email quickly, instead of just looking at the inbox view.

If you hide an icon, to show it again click Show all and it will appear with an X over it, bring up the menu on it and uncheck hide icon. Some themes, like at&t’s, use an application sub-menu. The shortcuts for applications above only work if the application’s icon is the on the current screen. Phone Shortcuts

Auto Text for conference call number: Format a call in number on a single line as follows:

I named mine "confcall". This allows me to just type "confcall" when I want my dial-in number pasted into a field.
Using Other Applications While On The Phone: Press ALT-Esc to bring up the task switcher or press the Menu button and choose Hide Call at the bottom of the list. To get back to the phone to hang-up or enter a number or another number, press the Green Send Button.
Creating a Conference Call: Call the first number. While in that call, click the Trackball > New Call. The Select Address screen appears and the current call is placed on hold. Click a contact. A menu appears. Click Call

Call Logs: If you don’t want call messages to show on the messages screen, go to Phone>Options and turn call logging off, or log only missed calls.
Auto Answer and Hang-up: Turn these on from the Profiles menu if you want these features when you remove or place the phone in the holster.
Restrict Caller ID and Dial from Home Screen: From the Phone>Options>General Options,
don’t restrict my caller ID and turn off the Dial from Home so I can use the very useful shortcuts above on the Home Screen.
Voicemail Phone Numbers: Program your voicemail number for the BB, not the office, under Phone>Options>Voicemail. This should be assigned to the W (1) key. If it no longer works, try taking the battery out and that will reboot the BB.
Call Forwarding and Waiting: When you don’t want to carry your BB, you can forward calls to another phone under Phone Options>Call Forwarding. A number can be stored and this feature can be turned on and off. Your carrier must have this feature. Some carries include a certain number of free forwarding minutes, but others don’t…so be sure to check. Call Waiting can also be activated from the Phone Options menu.
Send Calls Straight to Voicemail: Profiles>Advanced>(select a profile)>Phone>Do Not Disturb. This will make your incoming calls go straight to voicemail, when you have the profile-you-just-edited selected.

How to Turn off the Always blinking Green LED
How to Turn Off the Always-Blinking Green LED Light:
- Go to Options
- Go to Screen/Keyboard
- The LED Coverage Indicator will be set to "On"
- Turn it to "Off"
- Save Changes
More on the LED Indicator: This is one of the functions that really puts the ‘Crack’ into CrackBerry. Thinking back to the electricity course I took in high school, LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. The LED indicator blinks in different colors to deliver different notifications to the user:
- Blinking RED: The LED indicator blinks red whenever you have incoming/waiting communication messages on your phone – new email, new call/missed call, new BlackBerry Messenger message, new SMS, etc. It is basically impossible to ignore the blinking red light – you’ll find yourself having to reach for your BlackBerry no matter what. Welcome to BlackBerry Addiction. As Martha Stewart would say, It’s a Good Thing.
- Blinking GREEN: Coverage Indicator light. This lets you know you are connected to a network. It’s annoying as all heck and you will want to turn it OFF before it drives you mad (if turned on, it never stops blinking!).
- Blinking BLUE:Lets you know your phone is connected to a Bluetooth device, such as a Bluetooth headset.
- Blinking YELLOW: Plug it in! A blinking yellow light means it is time to charge your BlackBerry as you are running low on juice.
